Non-Genre Writers’ Organizations

  • Academy of American Poets: organization also publishes a magazine, American Poet, which contains upcoming poetry events, interviews, selections of poems by a few selected poets, book reviews and “books noted” and awards news.
  • Associated Writing Programs: puts out a directory of undergraduate and graduate writing programs across the country, and hosts an annual conference with interesting panels and many small press editors present.
  • PEN American Center: publishes a very useful directory, Grants and Awards Available to American Writers; they also give out a variety of awards.
  • Poets & Writers, Inc.: organization also publishes a magazine, which contains articles about writing, interviews with prominent writers (or up-and-comers), articles on writers’ colonies, info on grants and awards, and markets.
  • Writers’ Guild of America: The WGA is the labor union for writers in the motion picture, broadcast, cable and new technologies industries.
