Chicago Deep Dish May 2019

Deep Dish is a quarterly reading series of Science Fiction, Speculative Fiction and Fantasy! It is a crazy good event, with some incredible authors working in and out of this genre. This event was held on May 7, 2019 at Volumes Bookcafe in Chicago, IL.

Mary Anne Mohanraj

Michael Moreci – Michael Moreci is a comics author and novelist. His current comic series, Wasted Space, has been hailed as one of the best comics of 2018; it comes on the heels of Moreci’s other sci-fi series, Roche Limit, which Paste Magazine dubbed “one of the 50 best sci-fi comics of all-time.” Moreci has also written canonical comics for Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Planet of the Apes. His debut novel, Black Star Renegades was released in 2018 and was nominated for an Audie Award. Its sequel, We Are Mayhem, was released in April 2019.

Yudhanjaya Wijeratne – Yudhanjaya Wijeratne is a Sri Lankan science fiction author, data scientist and TEDx speaker, best known for Numbercaste and The Inhuman Race. By day he works at the intersection of near-future prediction, emerging tech and government policy, and by night he tries to get his cat to follow orders. He’s run news operations, almost been shot at too many times, and fallen off cliffs, but most of these things have been entirely by accident. He remains an ardent fan of William Gibson, Terry Pratchett, Peter Watts, Diana Wynne Jones and Final Fantasy VII.

Najm Haq – Najm Haq is a writer and creative consultant based in Chicago. Born and raised in Staten Island, he loves finding and telling stories to mystify and surprise. He has an MFA from Columbia College Chicago.

Angeli Primlani – Angeli Primlani is a fiction writer, director, playwright and actor. Her plays have been performed in Chicago by Accidental Shakespeare, Rasaka, Clock and Otherworld Theater Company. Upcoming shows include Lifeboat Theater’s production of The Black Knight in Evanston, May 10 and Pulled Pork Production’s performance of Utopia in Seattle, opening June 17. Recent stories “The Day Ann Marie Went to the House” appeared in the anthology Survivor and “Snowball the Rabbit is Dead” in Menial: Skilled Labor in Science Fiction.

Ajapa Sharma – Ajapa is the co-founding editor of Mithia Review, a journal of international science fiction and fantasy and a PhD student in the Department of History at the University of Illinois at Chicago where she works on ideas of self, identity and nation in mid-twentieth century South Asia. A graduate of the summer school at the Institute of World Literature, her poetry has appeared in Strange Horizons, and These Fine Lines: Poems of Restraint and Abandon.

Supipi Weerasooriya – Supipi Weerasooriya is a Sri Lankan author, who is completing her Master’s at UIC’s Program for Writers. Supipi has an MFA from Columbia University, where she was a recipient of the Felipe De Alba fellowship for one of her short stories. She is currently seeking publication for her stories, while working on her first novel. Supipi will begin her PhD at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the Fall.
