2025 A.C. Bose Grant Winner

The SLF is pleased to announce that Krushna Dande is the winner of the 2025 A.C. Bose Grant. Krushna Dande is a writer, artist, and musician living in New Delhi, India. Dande’s winning piece is The Keeper of the Ship.

Changes to A.C. Bose Grant for 2026

The SLF is pleased to announce that the amount awarded annually through the A.C. Bose Grant is increasing from $1,000 to $1,500. The A.C. Bose Grant is awarded annually to South Asian or Desi diaspora writers developing speculative fiction. It was established in 2019 in memory of Ashim Chandra Bose, a lover of books - especially science fiction and fantasy. Bose’s children, Rupa Bose and Gautam Bose, founded the grant to honor the legacy of the worlds their father opened up for them. The 2026 A.C. Bose Grant will open for submissions Jan. 1, 2026.

Diverse Writers and Diverse Worlds Grants open July 1-31

The SLF's 2025 Diverse Writers and Diverse Worlds Grants will be open for submissions July 1-31. The $500 Diverse Writers grant is intended to support speculative fiction writers from underrepresented and underprivileged groups whose marginalized identities may present additional obstacles in the writing and publishing process. The $500 Diverse Worlds grant is intended for work that best presents a diverse world, regardless of the writer’s background.

SLF writing workshop

Join Mary Anne Mohanraj and Benjamin Rosenbaum in August for the Writing Science Fiction & Fantasy Workshop! This 5-day workshop is designed for intermediate-level writers; it’s appropriate for writers who have started to publish professionally, for semi-pros, for indie authors working at that level, and for those ready to take the next step beyond courses aimed at beginners. A $150 deposit is required for both the retreat and workshop to secure your spot. Once we are closer to the event, the full amount will be charged: $750 for the Workshop, $400 for the Retreat.

SLF at WisCon 47: WisCONline 2025

SLF managing director Connor Nevitt, Special Events Manager Angeli Primlani, and Chicago Chapter head Philip Janowski held a panel at WisCONLINE during U.S. Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26, 2025. Participants learned about the goals and benefits of the SLF, including our classes, podcasts, workshops, local chapters and online resources.

SLF at 2025 Englewood Book Fest

This summer, the Wood Street Collective invited the SLF to their first annual Englewood Summer Book Fest at Lindblom Math and Science Academy. We had a great time promoting the SLF to this mostly Black community and meeting youth writers and creative artists of all kinds, including actors, publishers and book clubs. We hope we’ll be invited to more events like this!

Join our writing community

Saturday co-writing happens on Zoom every Saturday from 12-3 Central time. Join us for an hour or all three! These sessions are for writers who would like support for their writing, and are currently open and free of charge to anyone interested in being a part of our writing community. These sessions are a great time to catch up on the writing you’ve been meaning to do, in the supportive presence of others doing the same.

Opportunities for writers

The Loghaven Artist Residency invites writers of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, screenwriting and journalism in the creation stage of their specified project or work cycle to apply for a transformative residency experience on ninety acres of woodland in Knoxville, Tennessee. All Loghaven Fellows are awarded stipends to support the creation of new work during the residency. The residency has a $25 non-refundable application fee to apply. Apply by July 15, 2025 at loghaven.org/residencies/apply.

FIYAH, a quarterly speculative fiction magazine that features stories by and about Black people of the African Diaspora, will open for submissions July 1-31, 2025 on the theme of GODS AND MONSTERS. Learn more at fiyahlitmag.com/submissions.

Driftwood Press' 2025 Adrift Chapbook Contest is now open. The submission fee is $25. Each submitter will receive a free copy of a Driftwood Press poetry chapbook of their choice. Remains is a new color print magazine of new horror fiction, columns and features. It is published quarterly in January, April, July and October. The first issue was released in January 2025.
