Older Writers Grant closes May 31

The SLF's 2025 Older Writers Grant will close for submissions May 31, 2025. The Older Writers Grant is awarded annually to assist writers age 50+ who are just starting to work at a professional level.

SLF writing workshop

Would you be interested in attending a five-day, in-person writing workshop with Mary Anne Mohanraj and Benjamin Rosenbaum? This Chicagoland workshop is tentatively planned for August 2025. Writing resources from SLF's co-writing community

SLF’s Saturday co-writing community is mainly about mutual support and accountability for doing our own writing, but we do spend a little time at the beginning and at the top of each hour to touch base. Recently, somebody asked for recommendations about the craft of writing, and we collected a wide range of spontaneous suggestions in the chat.

Saturday co-writing happens on Zoom every Saturday from 12-3 Central time. Join us for an hour or all three! These sessions are for writers who would like support for their writing, and are currently open and free of charge to anyone interested in being a part of our writing community. These sessions are a great time to catch up on the writing you’ve been meaning to do, in the supportive presence of others doing the same.

Opportunities for writers

Strange Horizons will be opening for speculative fiction novelette submissions between the word count of 10,000 and 18,000 words on June 4th, 2025. Submissions will be capped at 300. Learn more at strangehorizons.com/submit/fiction-submission-guidelines.

FIYAH, a quarterly speculative fiction magazine that features stories by and about Black people of the African Diaspora, will open for submissions July 1-31, 2025 on the theme of GODS AND MONSTERS. Learn more at fiyahlitmag.com/submissions.

Driftwood Press' 2025 Adrift Chapbook Contest is now open. The submission fee is $25. Each submitter will receive a free copy of a Driftwood Press poetry chapbook of their choice. Remains is a new color print magazine of new horror fiction, columns and features. It is published quarterly in January, April, July and October. The first issue was released in January 2025.
